New Trier Road Win

O-Line Shines In Road Win at New Trier

The Broncos first road test of the season was a battle until the end against the undefeated New Trier Trevians, coming out of Wilmette with an impressive 28-23 win.   Barrington's ability to control the offensive line of scrimmage gave the Broncos a huge advantage as the game entered the fourth quarter when managing time of possession was key to sealing the victory.   The o-line led by Sr. Captain, Peter Hutchinson, blew open holes on a 1-2 running attack by RB Evan Penesis and QB Harley Thompson and they protected Thompson for an unencumbered night of passing.  Senior Cornerback, Nick Bordenet, was busy knocking down passes all night against a much taller NT wide receiver, holding the Trevs to their lowest scoring effort of the season.   Broncos record improves to 2-1.

BRONCOS BOUNCE BACK IN WEEK 2

After a tough loss to top ranked Warren in the opener, our Broncos bounced back on Friday with a convincing 42-0 victory led by our great Senior over conference foe, Wheeling.   The offense built up a 35-0 lead at the half with a balanced air & ground attack.  QB Harley Thompson connected on a 43-yd TD toss to Ben Cocoma and RB Evan Penesis slashed his way to 3 TD runs through a bunch of big holes opened up by the O-line.   The Broncos defense made plays from every position, led by some big hits by Sr. Safety John Van Gilder and an acrobatic interception by our other Sr. Safety Danny Sheedy.

TOUGH LOSS IN SEASON OPENER VS. #1 WARREN

The Broncos faced the preseason #1 ranked Warren Blue Devils in the season opener at BHS Stadium.   Warren proved their merits on both sides of the ball, with a stingy defense and offense led by an SEC-bound running back.  The Broncos defense didn't back down, but that didn't keep the Devils off the scoreboard.  Broncos lose a tough one 0-19.   Get the full Daily Herald article here.

Wild MSL title game goes to Barrington over Prospect

It was 47 years in the making and this one was truly super.

Barrington outlasted Prospect 52-45 Friday in Barrington in the first Mid-Suburban League football championship game since 1974. And in a game that had 1,089 yards of offense, it was a defensive play that was the biggest.

Jackson Gehrisch came over from near the middle of the field to intercept a pass at the Barrington 1-yard line with less than 30 seconds to play to preserve the win for the Broncos.

"As a defensive player, we don't love all those points, " Gehrisch said. "I figured that they would try to pick on a play in the corner. I saw it and just came over and picked it off."

It was a sweet win for Barrington (6-0), which was not even a member of the MSL when the last championship game was played.

"It was unbelievable," Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. "For this group to come out like this in a shootout with an absolutely fantastic team over there, I am elated and humbled."

Barrington had taken a 52-45 lead on Bryan Smith's third touchdown of the night. Smith, who finished with 263 yards on 14 carries, scored on a 6-yard run to put Barrington back on top 52-45 with 1:49 to play.

"This is my toughest game," Smith said. "I cramped up at the end, but I was able to fight it out."

Prospect (5-1), which was behind all evening, moved the ball from its 20 to the Barrington 32. But Gary Moeller, who was 31-of-48 for 300 yards, was picked off on a great play by Gehrisch.

"Our kids continued to fight to the end," Prospect coach Dan DeBoeuf said. "We came up a little short at the end. This is a super special group and I am very proud of them."

The first half was like a Tilt-a-Whirl as Barrington used big plays to combat Prospect's methodical offense to take a 35-21 lead at the break. There were touchdowns on 8 consecutive possessions as the teams combined for 610 yards of offense.

Peter Anderson (7-of-9, 237 yards) threw touchdown passes of 58 yards to Ryan Smith and 87 yards to Joey Gerskis. Bryan Smith had a75 -yard touchdown run for the Broncos.

All those scoring plays were one-play drives. They came after Prospect touchdowns on a 1-yard run by Moeller and Moeller touchdown passes of 26 yards to Frank Covey and 19 yards to Owen Walter.

The big play for Barrington came when lineman Owen Powell picked off a pass and went 26 yards for a touchdown that gave Barrington a two-touchdown lead.

Prospect's Luke Zardzin, who would finish with 246 yards on 36 carries, scored to close it 35-28 early in the third quarter. For the fourth time, Barrington followed on the first play with a touchdown, a 68-yard play from Anderson to Gerskis.

Zardzin cut the deficit to 7 on a 43-yard touchdown run and Prospect added a safety to make it 42-37 late in the third quarter.

Barrington's Ramiro Vences kicked a 31-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it 45-37. With 4:37 to play, Moeller threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tyson Splinter and then the duo connected on the conversion to tie the game at 45-45.

-JV loses 19-6, but finish the season 4-2.  They held their own against a team of upper classmen!  Great season, Boys!

- Freshmen finish the season with a 21-7 win to finish the season with a Red Team 5-1 and White Team 2-0 record.  Big time, Boys.  Way to go!

Barrington tops Hoffman, will meet Prospect for MSL title

As Barrington gets prepared to play in next weekend's Mid-Suburban League football championship game, it will bring prep football aficionados a couple of interesting trivial twists.

First of all, it would be the Mid-Suburban League's first gridiron title clash since 1974 when Schaumburg edged Hersey 7-6 in what was titled the 'MSL Super Bowl'.

That same year, the Broncos, under the guidance of head coach Bill Graham, won their seventh league title in 10 seasons as a member of the North Suburban Conference and advanced in the first IHSA state playoffs, going all the way to the Class 4A semifinals, going 11-1.

But prior to that Mid-Suburban title tilt, they had to complete their Mid-Suburban West slate versus a prideful flock of visiting Hawks from Hoffman Estates that they would need their final offensive series of half number one as well as their opening possession of half number two to find their way past Hoffman 37-14 at Frederick/Motor Werks Auto Group Field to finish West play undefeated at 5-0.

They will play host next Friday to MSL East champ Prospect (5-0), which posted a 56-33 decision at Buffalo Grove to claim the East division berth.

"First off, credit to Tim (Hoffman Estates coach Heyse) and his staff. We knew that they would come in here and fight," Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. "So what they did in the beginning wasn't a surprise. Our kids knew that we needed to stick to our plan and we did that. Our players kept our poise, our coaches kept our poise. To be able to finish off a 5-0 MSL West season is a credit to our coaches and a credit to our players."

Hoffman Estates (2-3) had its offensive attack in full flight during the first 24 minutes of play, pulling even with Barrington late in the first half on a 65-yard strike by senior QB Joe Ayala to junior WR Jashawn Johnson that tied the host Broncos at 14 late in the first half before a 23-yard Ramiro Vences field goal gave Barrington a 17-14 lead at the break.

It would be on the Broncos' first play from scrimmage that senior Jack Kapchek would make the game's breakthrough play, taking the handoff from QB Peter Anderson 61 yards to pay dirt and a 24-14 lead that the Barrington defense made insurmountable as it pitched a second-half shutout.

"We came out (from halftime) where we talked about running a specific play," Kapchek, who finished with a combined 127 yards rushing and receiving, said. "I just saw the alley way, I saw the run and just had to turn on the burners from there."

Fellow senior Bronco runner Bryan Smith added 173 yards on 19 carries including a couple of TD receptions (4 and 15 yards) from Anderson in the victory.

Barrington's big strikes gave the Broncos the Mid-Suburban West title Friday in Barrington.

Barrington rallied from three deficits to overtake Fremd 35-21. With their win and Palatine's win over Hoffman Estates, the Broncos (4-0, 4-0) captured the MSL West title.

"Our guys played their tails off," Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. "It was us just taking what they were giving us."

Barrington found itself trailing at halftime for the first time this season.

Fremd was able to take a 7-0 lead at the break on a first-quarter touchdown. Cade Cheripka scored on a 9-yard run thanks to a pair of blocks by Jack Walsh and Chris Skaria.

Barrington then began to break things loose by going over the top of the Fremd defense. Joey Gurskis caught the first of a pair of bombs from Peter Anderson. His 54-yard haul set up a 3-yard run by Anderson to tie the game at 7-7.

Fremd roared right back as Ryan Saxe scored on a 1-yard run. It was set up by a 26-yard pass from Saxe (11-of-15, 241 yards) to Cheripka.

Two plays later, Anderson connected with Gurskis again, this time for an 81-yard touchdown and the game was tied at 14.

"It was a great night for me," said Gurskis, who scored his first touchdown of the season and had 5 catches for 148 yards.

"I kind of knew watching film that the safeties like to sit in. So I knew that the corner and fade route were going to be more open."

Again Fremd (2-2, 2-2) came right back. This time it was Saxe connecting on a pair of passes to Archie Cox (10 receptions, 130 yards) to move to ball down the field. On third-and-goal from the 1, Saxe would score to put Fremd up 21-14 with 10:51 to play.

But the play would be costly for the Vikings as Saxe broke his foot on the play.

It was all Barrington from there.

Bryan Smith busted off a 60-yard touchdown run on the first play after the kickoff to tie the game at 21-21.

After a defensive stop, Anderson (11-of-16, 250 yards) threw a pair of passes to tight end Tom Sweeney right over the middle where Saxe had been previously playing. That took the ball down to the Fremd 15. Three plays later Anderson busted over from the 1 to give Barrington its first lead at 28-21 with 3:19 left.

Fremd failed to move the ball, turning it over on downs. Smith then scored on the first play on a 42-yard run to close out the game for the Broncos.

"It was just great blocking and execution by the guys in front of me," said Smith, who carried the ball 10 times for 130 yards. "We got some energy and we executed after that."

Fremd coach Lou Sponsel said that the big plays hurt his team.

"We played disciplined in the first half," Sponsel said. "We then took turns not doing our jobs defensively in the second half."

Barrington defense comes up big in win over Conant

The Barrington offense was able to move the ball up and down the field on the ground and through the air Thursday night at Conant.

But it was the defense that set the tone for the Broncos in a 35-13 Mid-Suburban West win over the Cougars.

From the first Conant offensive play, a tackle for a 1-yard loss by Barrington defensive lineman Matt Kolder, the Broncos defense was up to the challenge.

Barrington built a 35-0 lead before Conant tallied twice late.

"They're a pretty complete team," said Cougars coach Bryan Stortz of the Broncos. "They're too good to make small mistakes against, which wind up looking big on the scoreboard."

Barrington scored 2 touchdowns in the first quarter, on a 63-yard run by senior Bryan Smith and then a 4-yard run from quarterback Peter Anderson.

In the second quarter, Conant took possession of the ball at its own 6-yard line and went on an extraordinary 27-play drive, but wound up turning the ball over on downs at the Barrington 11 thanks to some clutch plays on defense by the Broncos' Evan Roper and Evan Krueger.

"That drive was a testament to our kids' work ethic," Stortz said. "We unfortunately didn't get points, but we held the ball the entire quarter. I was proud of our kids on that drive."

Barrington went on to score three more times to put the game out of reach.

Smith ran in again for his second touchdown, this time from 4 yards away. Junior Ben Cocoma caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Anderson, who also hit Jack Serrano with a 22-yard touchdown strike to give the 3-0 Broncos a five-touchdown lead.

Conant countered thereafter with two rushing scores by Ryan Kutella, the initial one coming from 17 yards out, and then another from 6 yards away.

Senior linebacker Justice Cromwell made a big fourth-down stop for the Broncos in the final quarter, negating another Conant drive and stopping the Cougars from closing the gap any further.

Smith finished with 186 yards on the ground for the Broncos, while classmate Anderson threw for 150 yards.

The Cougars spread the ball around in the rushing game as Kutella led the way with 17 rushes for 93 yards; Dominick Minninni had 20 carries for 54 yards; and Giuseppe Dugo gained 40 yards on 13 carries.

"Our kids keep coming out and fighting," said Stortz, "and they continue to get better. I like the attitude of all our guys. It's not necessarily where it needs to be yet, but it's getting better every day."

-JV wins its 2nd game with a 30-8 win over Conant.  The sophomore squad has scored at least 30 points in each of their first 3 games.

- Freshmen Red & White split a game with Stevenson, winning 13-0.  Way to go, boys!

Anderson, Barrington power past Palatine

Barrington has been known for its solid quarterback play and toughness up front. Both were on huge display Friday night in Barrington's home opener as the Broncos rolled over Palatine 37-14 in the Mid-Suburban West.

Barrington quarterback Peter Anderson threw for 242 yards and 4 touchdowns while running for another.

 "We got that all done together," said Anderson, whose scrambling enabled him to find some open receivers. "My boys up front did a great job for me again. And the defense helped out a lot by getting us the ball back."

Meanwhile the Broncos' offense piled up 463 yards behind the play of Logan Ambroz, Matt Blasius, Mark Gorbatenko, Cooper Slater and Adam Krieps. With them blocking up front Bryan Smith was able to rush for 105 yards on 9 carries and Jack Kapcheck had 82 yards on 13 carries.

"We knew it was going to be a physical week," Ambroz said. "They have a tough front. They are big, fast and strong. But our scout team gave us a good look all week and that helped."

"We gave up a big play early but our guys responded well after that," Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. "I was proud of the way our offense executed the plan. "

Anderson had a huge first half for the Broncos. The senior threw for 199 yards and 3 touchdowns as Barrington took a 21-8 lead.

Palatine took an early 8-0 lead thanks to the Pecson brothers.

Tyler Pecson picked off a pass and returned it 31-yards to the Barrington 22. On the next play, Eric Pecson connected with Alex Clue for a 22-yard touchdown. Eric Pecson then tossed to Mitch Larkin after a bad snap on the conversion for the early lead.

Anderson and Barrington (2-0, 2-0) took over from there.

Anderson hooked up with Tommy Sweeney on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Anderson followed with a pair of touchdown passes of 30 and 8 yards to Jack Serrano to give the Broncos the lead at the break.

Anderson added a third-quarter 14-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Smith (7 catches, 91 yards) and then busted off a 30-yard scoring run as the Broncos pulled away. Ramiro Vences kicked a 19-yard field goal to make it 37-8.

Barrington's defense, led by Matt Kolder, Owen Powell, Justice Cromwell and Evan Roper, kept Palatine (1-1, 1-1) in check after the Pirates' first touchdown.

"On defense, our number one concern was (Jake) Bostick and all their skilled kids," Sanchez said. "To be able to limit them tonight after the explosion they had last week was real good."

Palatine added a late touchdown on a 6-yard pass from Eric Pecson to Bostick.

"We have some good boys and good players," Palatine coach Corey Olson said. "Some of them are playing both ways and it takes some time to get into that shape. They are fighting hard."

BRONCOS DEFENSE STIFLES SAXONS IN SEASON OPENING ROUTE

All Three Units Shine in Season Opener 34-6 Win

Everything was clicking for the Broncos in their season opener against the Saxons at Schaumburg H.S.  The field goal unit got the Broncos on the board first with a 52-yd bomb by Vences off the crossbar and in and the good bounces kept coming.

The offense looked good on the ground and in the air thanks to solid play by the O-line.  Peter Anderson went pretty much untouched through the contest, allowing him to complete passes to a bevy of receivers, with two big pass plays going to Junior WR Ben Cocoma, who scored the Broncos first touchdown catching a wide-open 26-yd lofted spiral from the Sr. QB.

The defense put a hurt on the Saxons, keeping them off the scoreboard until :20 left in the game.  Until their final drive, the Saxons were held to just 5 first downs on 7 yds rushing.  Senior inside linebackers, Evan Roper and Justice Cromwell, kept Schaumburg in check the entire game.  Picks by Sr. Jackson Gehrisch on a textbook tip drill, and Jr. Phillip Chapa in the 4th quarter put an exclamation point on the squads' stellar performance.

The boys have Palatine in week 2.  Have a great week of practice and let's go get another sweep.

Broncos blanked by Fremd

It was a case of deja vu for Barrington on Friday night. And not the good kind.

For the second year in a row, Fremd shut out Barrington to claim a MSL West win. What's more, the Vikings won by the identical score, 14-0, to hand the Broncos their second straight loss.

Fremd dominated on a cold, windy night with a punishing ground game, led by Brian Hardy's 168 rushing yards,  Barrington, meanwhile, turned the ball over three times and could never get into a rhythm offensively. Quinn Ketel led the Broncos with 76 yards on 12 carries.

The Broncos (4-3, 1-2 MSL West) now need to win both of their remaining regular-season games, against Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg, to clinch a playoff bid.

Conant spoils Barrington's Homecoming

This MSL West Homecoming showdown came down to fourth-quarter, fourth-down plays. Conant converted its big one for the winning touchdown. Barrington failed to convert its two and lost.

Malik Frederick ran for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cougars to a 21-14 win that snapped Barrington's four-game winning streak.

Barrington rolled the dice on a a fourth-and-2 at its own 45 with about nine minutes left and quarterback Tommy Fitzpatrick was stopped a yard short of the line to gain. Conant took over and drove to the Barrington 27. There, on a fourth-and-3, Cougar QB Giuseppe Dugo raced around the right end for a TD and a 21-14 lead.

The Broncos weren't done yet, however. They drove all the way to the Conant 6 in the closing minute, but Fitzpatrick's fourth-down pass sailed over E.J. Darlington's head with 30 seconds left.

The loss dropped Barrington to 4-2 (1-1 MSL West). Conant (6-0, 2-0)  is now in the driver's seat in the conference.

Barrington wins 4th straight over 2 days

It took about 18 hours over two days, but Barrington finally posted its fourth straight win, 24-7 over Palatine.

The Broncos (4-1) leaped out to a 14-0 lead on Friday night when the game was suspended due to weather with 10:44 left in the second quarter.  Play resumed at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning and the Broncos completed the job.

Tommy Fitzpatrick threw touchdown passes -- one to Joey Gurskis on Friday and one to Matt Reedy on Saturday -- Quinn Ketel scored on a one-yard TD run and Ramiro Vences hit a 32-yard field goal to account for the Broncos' points. D

Defensively, Barrington got interceptions from Nick Barron, Luke Kozlowski and Johnny Podlesnik. The Pirates spoiled what would have been the Broncos third shutout of the season by scoring with just 2:37 left and the game already decided.

Next up: a Homecoming showdown with 5-0 Conant.

- JV (5-0) kept its perfect record intact with a 55-13 pasting of the Pirates.

- Freshman Red (1-4) dropped a 20-6 decision.

- Freshman White (1-2) claimed a 12-6 victory.

Broncos whip Glenbrook South

EJ Darlington set the tone with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown 13 seconds into the game and Barrington cruised from there to post a 41-15 road win over Glenbrook South.

The Broncos (3-1) built a 34-0 halftime lead as Quinn Ketel had two scoring runs and Ramiro Vences hit 47- and 44-yard field goals. John Podlesnik scored the last points of the half when scored on a 36-yard pick-six.

Broncos notch second straight shutout win

Barrington's defense did it again. One week after blanking Buffalo Grove, the Broncos held New Trier scoreless for a 35-0 win on Friday night at BHS Stadium.

Lucas Kozlowski had two interceptions and Adam Brokke one to lead a Bronco defense that hasn't allowed a point in eight quarters. Meanwhile, Tommy Fitzpatrick threw for 168 yards and a touchdown and scored one on the ground to lead a Barrington attack that has scored 77 points over the last two weeks.

Barrington (2-1) next travels to Glenbrook South on Sept. 20 to take on the Titans.

Broncos pound Buffalo Grove for win No. 500

Barrington has been playing football since 1924. Last Friday night, the Broncos won the 500th game in school history.

Barrington routed Buffalo Grove 42-0 for the milestone win on Friday night at Barrington Community Stadium. It took a week long than they would have liked, but the Broncos bounced back from a tough loss to Warren in the season opener to dominate the Bison from whistle to whistle.

Quarterback Tommy Fitzpatrick led the offense, going 11-for-15 passing for 211 yards and three touchdown passes, and he also added a rushing TD. The Broncos' defense pitched a shutout while recording five sacks and an interception and holding BG to nine yards rushing.

Barrington hosts New Trier in its next game on Sept. 13 at 7:30 pm at Barrington Community Stadium.

Broncos drop opener to Warren

Barrington's quest for the 500th win in program history will have to wait at least another week.

The Broncos lost their season opener, 16-6, on Friday night at Warren in a defensive slugfest.

Warren jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and the struggling Barrington offense didn't get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, when QB Tommy Fitzpatrick hit WR E.J. Darlington for a 20-yard scoring strike.

Fitzpatrick threw for 219 yards, Darlington finished with seven catches for 101 yards and Quinn Ketel rushed for 81 yards to pace Barrington. Defensively, LB Dayven Shinhoster led Barrington with 12 tackles, while S Adam Brokke accounted for 11. Lukas Van Nell had three tackles for loss.

Barrington's next chance to join the 500-win club will be Friday night, Sept. 6, against Buffalo Grove at Barrington Stadium.

BRONCOS BOUNCE BACK IN WEEK 2

After a tough loss to top ranked Warren in week 1, our Broncos were firing on all cylinders Friday night as they cruised to a 42-0 shutout against conference foe, Wheeling.  Evan Penesis slashed his way through the defense thanks to a bunch of big holes created by the O-line, on his way to a 3 TD first half performance.  Senior QB, Harley Thompson, had an efficient night in the air, connecting with his classmate, WR Ben Cocoma, on four completions -- one for a graceful  43-yd TD.   A stout Broncos defense made their presence felt at every position, with a series of hard hits by Senior Safety, John Van Gilder, and an acrobatic interception by Senior Safety, Danny Sheedy.  Let's take this momentum into New Trier on Friday!
